The Musicophile.com
This website is intended to be (hopefully) a useful resource to any musician concerned with developing their musicianship. I also hope to benefit from the experience of creating this website, and I believe I will learn a lot as I write each new article. I intend to take a somewhat holistic approach to improving my own musicianship, very much believing in the merits of mixing disciplines, the idea that improvements and knowledge in one field can lead to insights and improvements in another. I also believe that to achieve consistently, to ensure progression and to make a sustainable contribution to music, a musician has to be conscious of what they are doing, and why they are doing it.
I intend for there to be two main aspects of this website, the first will be very explicitly linked to the improvement of musicianship. I intend to cover as wide a range of subjects as possible, and in as much detail as I can. Subjects might include: recording, tuning systems, musicology, traditional music theory, acoustics, specific recordings etc. I also intend to conduct a few experiments; how exactly does Pythagorean tuning sound? How fast can you expect to see improvements in sight reading over time? What is it like to work with the old reel-to-reel tape machines? (This is for those of us born into the digital age of recording.)
The second aspect of the website will be more orientated towards personal development, and boosting creativity. Creativity is at the heart of musicianship, and sustainable creativity requires a healthy mind. A healthy mind requires a range of stimulation, as well as a healthy body. Music is inspired by the human experience, and therefore everything experienced in life influences our music, from the other arts, through all that we call culture, to current affairs, daily life, to what we eat for breakfast each day. For this reason, if I seem to be straying off the subject of music directly, please bear with me.
If you want to read on, I suggest you read my ‘Setting Out’ article, which outlines my aims and motivation in a little more detail, or alternatively you could choose an article from the menu on the right. There aren’t many as of yet, but I have a list of things to write about as long as my arm, so please check back soon. If you have any comments or advice for me please feel free to use the comment forms or use the contact details provided here.
Thank you for your time.
